About the Program

The B.Tech Mechanical Engineering (Specialization: Rail Engineering) program focuses on laying a foundation in core engineering courses during the first two years. The third year is devoted to developing a basic understanding of railway engineering across all key areas with courses in core manufacturing processes, materials, machine tools, high-speed rail systems, railway operations, tribology, and operations research.

A course on high-speed rail systems exposes the students to various railway subsystems and their terminology, especially rolling stock and the working principles involved during rail-wheel contact. By studying railway operations, students will gain a high-level understanding of various rail operations, including infrastructure management, signalling, rolling stock, operational planning, and railway complexity.

The primary knowledge of Railways complements this by developing a keen understanding of materials, machinery, contact phenomena between moving elements, surface interfaces, and condition-monitoring techniques to resolve materials-degradation problems. In the final year, specialized courses are offered in Mechanical and Rail Engineering. Specialized courses are designed for the respective domain and shall be helpful at Indian Railways’ Centralized Training Institutes (CTIs).

The curriculum is being designed with industry needs in mind and aligned with academic credentials. The curriculum is supplemented by a digital resource pool from NPTEL/Swayam to enhance technical domain knowledge.
