Geotechnology Lab

The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory intends to train the students in the field of testing of soils to determine their physical, index and engineering Properties. Geotechnical laboratory tests consist of number of tests for the properties of soil. Soil testing is an important function of geotechnical testing and civil engineering in the design of foundations, highway/road pavements, embankments and other earth structures. Geotechnical testing provides valuable information on soil mechanics and materials common to soils such as silt, clay, sand, gravel or rock.

LAB OBJECTIVES:

  1. Classify the soil based on index properties of soil
  2. Find the field bulk and dry density of cohesion-less and cohesive soils
  3. Find the coefficient of permeability of coarse grained and fine grained soils & compressibility characteristics of soil
  4. Evaluate the shear strength parameters of soil

EXPERIMENTS:

  1. Determination of Specific Gravity.
  2. Field density test.
  3. Determination of particle size distribution of soil
  4. Sieve Analysis.
  5. Wet Analysis
  6. Determination of Atterberg’s limit.
  7. Permeability test, variable and constant head.
  8. Standard proctor compaction test.
  9. Direct shear test.
  10. Triaxial compression test.
  11. Consolidation test.
  12. Static cone penetration test.
  13. Standard penetration test.
